As is the case with the injection unit built into the VR6 model. This is an electronic engine system that carries out computer control of the moment of injection, the moment of ignition, idling and CO content.
Safety precautions when working with the injection system
Before loosening the flare nuts, thoroughly clean them and their surroundings.
Place the dismantled parts on a clean surface and cover them well with paper or synthetic material. Do not use fibrous cloths for this. It is also impossible to touch the connecting elements of the parts with greasy hands, preventing foreign bodies from entering the system.
Dismantled parts that will not be immediately reinstalled should be placed in a box or other container and stored properly.
New parts should only be taken out of the packaging immediately before installation
If the fittings of the machine have been opened, do not use compressed air to blow out other parts. If possible, do not move the vehicle. Always cover open connections well to prevent any foreign bodies from entering the system.
Since the electronic part of the integrated injection unit works in conjunction with the ignition system, the following precautions must be taken when working on the unit to avoid damage and (or) breakage of parts.
When disconnecting and connecting the electrical cables of the ignition system, injection system or measuring instruments, the ignition must always be switched off.
If you need to check the engine using the starter without starting it (e.g. when checking compression pressure), pull out the middle cable (terminal 4) from the ignition distributor and close it to the housing. For this, a connecting wire is best used.
When starting with a quick starter, do not use more than 16.5V; do not operate the starter for more than one minute.
When cleaning the engine with a liquid cleaner, turn off the ignition to avoid a short circuit.
When carrying out welding work on a car (regardless of the type of welding) always disconnect the cable from both poles of the battery.
When towing a vehicle with a faulty ignition or injection system, disconnect the ignition switch.
Idling and CO content regulation
To check the idling and the CO content, special control devices are required. Idling and CO content cannot be adjusted. however, their parameters can be changed. Since there are no special devices used in car repair shops «Volkswagen», the following indications should be regarded only as unavoidable auxiliary measures, for the implementation of which, however. certain knowledge is required.
Bring the engine up to operating temperature. All electrical current consumers should be switched off. The fan must also not run, the exhaust system must not be leaky.
Connect the tachometer and CO indicator according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Start the engine and let it idle.
Raise the engine speed briefly to 3000 rpm three times and then slow it down.
Check RPM and CO content. If the engine speed is not equal to 770-870 rpm or the CO content is not in the range of 0.2-1.2%. need to go to the workshop. Causes may lie in the idle speed control valve, leaks in the air intake system, in the lambda adjusting device or even in the lambda probe.
