Windshield Wipers - Troubleshooting
1. If the wiper motor does not work, rotates jerkily or slowly, check the reliability of the connections, the condition of the motor brushes, the ease of movement, the linkage, the general condition of the motor and the switch on the gear column.
2. If the brushes are not set to their original, parking position when the wiper is turned off, then it can be assumed that the motor crank is not installed correctly, damage (cliff) wire connected to motor terminal 53 or no connection between terminals 53 and 31.
3. If the wiper motor continues to run even though the switch is off, replace the switch.
4. If the motor is noisy or slow, the gear housing may be misfit, lack of lubrication or severe wear - in any case, the motor must be replaced.
Windshield Wiper Motor Replacement - Dual Wiper System (pic. P:16).
1. Disconnect the wire "masses" from the battery.
2. Wring out a plastic cap from a nut of fastening of the screen wiper lever, turn away a nut and remove the lever.
3. Disconnect the electrical wire connector from the motor.
4. Remove the bolt that secures the frame and wiper motor to the bracket on the bulkhead of the engine compartment (pic. P:17).
5. Separate the motor from the wiper frame by removing the two bolts.
6. Check up a condition and reliability of fastening of levers and fingers of the mechanism of a screen wiper, if necessary replace worn-out details.
7. If the motor does not require replacement, do not remove the crank from the motor shaft.
8. Before installing a new wiper motor, connect the battery, connect wires to the motor (attach connector) and turn it on with the wiper switch on the steering column. Allow the motor to complete at least two full cycles and turn it off. The motor must stop in its original, parking position. Install the crank as shown in fig. P:18.
9. Installation of a screen wiper is carried out upside-down.
Wiper Motor Replacement - Single Wiper System
Scirocco models are equipped with a single blade windshield wiper.
1. Disconnect the wire "masses" from the battery.
2. Disconnect the wire connector from the motor.
3. Remove the three screws that secure the motor to the bracket.
4 Remove the wiper motor.
5. Assembly is carried out in the reverse order. Install the motor on the bracket and before attaching the crank to the motor, connect the wiring and turn on the wiper with the switch. Let the motor run at least two complete cycles, then turn it off. The motor should stop in its original, parking position. Install the crank as shown in fig. P:19.
NOTE: Before assembly, lubricate the mechanism friction points with molybdenum grease.
Rear wiper motor - replacement
1. Disconnect the wire "masses" from the battery.
2. Remove an internal upholstery of a door of a back.
3. Remove the wiper arm and nuts along with washers and gasket.
4. Turn out bolts of fastening of a screen wiper, pull out the motor forward and disconnect a socket of wires. Remove the motor from the tailgate.
5. Installation of the electric motor of a back screen wiper is carried out upside-down. Before attaching the crank, install the motor on the bracket, connect the wire connector to it, turn on the motor and allow it to complete at least two complete cycles. The crank should stop in the position shown in fig. P:20.
Wiper mechanism - replacement
1. Disconnect the wire "masses" from the battery.
2. Remove wiper arms (see above).
3. Remove the cover that closes the compartment behind the partition, unscrew the bolts securing the wiper bracket, disconnect the electrical wire connector from the electric motor and remove it into the wiper (motor and linkage) assembled.
4. Disconnect the rods from the cranks and unscrew the motor mounting nuts.
5. Separate the motor with an arm from the mechanism of a screen wiper.
6. Assembly is carried out in the reverse order.
Windshield washers
On early models, a manual glass washer pump was installed. Such pumps rarely fail, and in the event of a malfunction, they must be replaced.
Later models are equipped with washer reservoirs with built-in pumps (pic. P:21). If the pump does not run, check for voltage on the positive wire of the pump with the ignition on and the wiper/washer switch in the correct position. Also check the reliability of the connection of the negative contact of the pump with "weight". If the electrical circuit is OK, replace the pump.
To remove the pump, disconnect the wire connector and washer tube from it, then release the top of the pump from the reservoir and lift the pump up, making sure that the pump seal is correctly located in the reservoir opening. Install the pump in reverse order. Fill the reservoir and check the adjustment of the washer nozzles.
