Removal the cylinder head (VW Passat B6)

Note: The engine should be warm to the touch.


Work execution procedure



For further operations, the ground wire must be disconnected from the battery. Therefore, it is necessary to first check whether the car has a radio with coding.

After installation, it is necessary to reinstall all cable fasteners that were removed or cut during dismantling.

Change the engine oil if the oil is contaminated.

Disconnect the battery ground wire with the ignition off.

Remove the engine cover, if present.

Then drain the coolant.

Unscrew the exhaust system holder (Fig. 2.88).

Note: On vehicles with engine letter designations BLX and BVX, the exhaust system bracket is removed together with the lambda probe cable box behind the catalytic converter.

Loosen the nuts securing the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold (Fig. 2.90).

Note: The detachable elements in the intake pipe must not be bent more than 10°. There is a risk of damage

Loosen bolts 1–3 and remove the left exhaust manifold stand (fig. 2.163).

Remove the right exhaust manifold stand (fig. 2.164).

Disconnect hose 1 and connecting plug from intake air temperature sensor 2 on air filter housing 9 (Fig. 2.83).

Unscrew bolts 3 and remove the air filter housing with suction hose 4.

Disconnect the water hose from the cylinder head (fig. 2.165).

Remove the suction pipe.

Remove/disconnect all other existing electrical wires from the cylinder head.

Cars with engine letter designations BLR, BLX, BVX and BVY



Remove the EGR connecting pipe between the intake manifold and the EGR valve.

Disconnect the water hoses from the EGR valve.

Continuation of installation operations for all vehicles



Remove the poly V-belt.

Remove the locking pin from the poly V-belt tensioner.

Remove the timing belt.

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown and remove them completely (fig. 2.166).

Remove the cylinder head.

Note: Check that all hoses and lines between the engine, transmission and body are disconnected.
