Replacing brake fluid (VW Passat B6)

Replace the brake fluid in the brake system and clutch unit.

Unscrew cap 1 of the brake system expansion tank (Fig. 6.6).

Using a hose from the brake system filling and bleeding device, pump out as much brake fluid as possible (Fig. 6.7).

Note: It is prohibited to remove the mesh filter of the brake system expansion tank from the tank.


Caution: Do not reuse the extracted brake fluid

Screw adapter 1 to the brake system expansion tank (Fig. 6.8).

Place the brake pedal stop between the driver's seat and the brake pedal and secure it in place.

Connect the hose from the brake inflation and bleeding device or from the brake inflation and bleeding device to the adapter.

Note: Use a suitable bleed hose and make sure it is tightly attached to the bleed nipple to prevent air from entering the brake system.

Attach bleeder hose 1 to the front left bleeder nipple, open the nipple and release the appropriate amount of brake fluid (see table) (Fig. 6.9).

Tighten the nipple.

Repeat these operations on the right side of the vehicle at the front.

Remove both wheels on the rear axle to gain access to the bleed nipples.

Remove the plugs from the caliper bleeder nipples.

Place the exhaust hose 1 of the canister of the suction device onto the rear left bleed nipple (Fig. 6.10).

Open the bleed nipple and release the appropriate amount of brake fluid (see table). Tighten the nipple.

Repeat the described operations on the right rear caliper.

For vehicles with manual transmission



Remove the air filter housing.

Attach the hose to the bleed nipple of the clutch slave cylinder.

Open the nipple and release about 100 ml of brake fluid.

Close the nipple and quickly press the clutch pedal 10-15 times in a row.

Open the nipple again and release about 50 ml of brake fluid.

Close the nipple, remove the hose and press the clutch pedal several times.

Reinstall the air filter housing in reverse order.

Total volume: about 1.15 l

Place the caps on the bleed nipples.

Move the brake filler and bleeder lever or brake filler and bleeder lever to position "B".

Remove the hose from the adapter.

Unscrew the adapter from the brake system expansion tank.

Check the brake fluid level and correct it if necessary.

Screw on the cap 1 of the expansion tank (Fig. 6.6).

Remove the brake pedal stop.

Check the pedal pressure and free travel of the brake pedal. Free travel: maximum 1/3 of the pedal travel.
