Checking the thickness of the front and rear brake pads (VW Passat B6)

Front brake pads



To most accurately determine the remaining thickness of the brake pads, remove the front left wheel.

Remove wheel bolt caps if necessary.

Mark the position of the wheel relative to the brake disc.

Remove the wheel bolts and remove the wheel.

Measure the thickness of the outer and inner pads (Fig. 6.11).

Wear criterion: 2 mm.

With the thickness of the pads (without back plate) 2mm brake pads are considered worn and should be replaced.

Note: When replacing brake pads, be sure to also check the degree of wear of the brake discs


Screw the wheel into the marked position.

Tighten the wheel bolts in a crisscross pattern.

After completing the work, place the adapter for the anti-theft bolts in the car tool kit.

Replace the wheel bolt caps if necessary.

Rear brake pads



Shine a flashlight through the hole in the wheel rim.

Visually determine the thickness of the outer pad.

Shine a flashlight on the inner shoe and hold a mirror underneath it.

Visually determine the thickness of the inner pad (Fig. 6.12).

Wear criterion: 2 mm

With the thickness of the pads (without back plate) 2mm brake pads are considered worn and should be replaced.
