Heating of air for heating of salon is carried out by a heater or the conditioner.
Hot coolant constantly passes through the heater radiator, from which the air supplied to the passenger compartment quickly heats up. The air supply to the cabin is provided by a fan operating at different intensities (speed) (see illustration 8.0).

If, for example, due to contamination of the outside air, it is necessary to turn off its intake, then the air recirculation mode can be maintained in the passenger compartment, i.e. only the air in the cabin will be used. To do this, the corresponding key turns on the recirculation mode. When the key is pressed, the executive engine of the recirculation mode is turned on.
For Golf/Touran vehicles with a diesel engine, the heating of the air for interior heating is slower due to this. Therefore, a PTC coolant heating unit is integrated into the coolant circuit. This heater additionally heats the coolant at low air temperatures. After starting the engine, the heater, depending on the air temperature, quickly heats up the air in the heater.
If faults or malfunctions occur in the heating or air conditioning system, they are registered by the self-diagnosis system and can be read using the diagnostic tester.
Attention! If, as part of the work on the heater, it is necessary to carry out actions related to the electrical system, then it is imperative to disconnect the wire terminal «masses» (-) from the negative pole of the battery. Even the simple disconnection of a wire or connection terminal is considered work on electrical equipment.
Cars with air conditioning
Golf/Touran vehicles can be additionally equipped with air conditioning, which is both a heater and an air conditioning system.
In air conditioning mode, the air conditioner works like a refrigerator.
The compressor compresses the gaseous, environmentally friendly and azon-depleting layer-free gas freon refrigerant R-134A.
As a result, the refrigerant is heated and it enters the cooler, where it is cooled and liquefied. Through the pressure reducing valve, the refrigerant is fed to the evaporator, where the resulting liquid again passes into a gaseous state. In this case, it is not strongly chilled.
As a result of the evaporation process and the transition of the refrigerant to a liquid state, the air taken from outside is cooled, and the moisture contained in the air turns into condensate.
The intensity of air cooling depends on the set temperature and the speed of the passenger compartment fan.
Attention! Do not open the air conditioner refrigerant circuit. Skin contact with coolant causes frostbite. If refrigerant comes into contact with the skin, immediately rinse the skin with cold water for at least 15 minutes. The refrigerant is colorless, odorless and heavier than air. If a refrigerant leaks, people near the floor where the vehicle is parked or in rooms below the leak may suffocate.
When the air conditioner is off, the compressor does not work, which reduces fuel consumption.
In vehicles with a diesel engine, the auxiliary heater is also switched off, which also has a favorable effect on fuel consumption.
It is recommended to turn on the air conditioner for some time at least once a month and during the cold season, setting the most intensive mode of operation when driving with normal grayness and with a warm engine. In this case, the refrigerant circulates, and the lubricant contained in it on the parts, preventing their porosity or other damage.
Attention! Work on the air conditioner must be carried out by a specialist workshop. For this reason, repair of the air conditioner is not covered in this manual.
On request, Golf/Touran cars can be equipped with automatic air conditioning (Climatronic).
Automation maintains a constant temperature in the cabin, dehumidifies the air, which prevents the windows from fogging.
The volume of air supplied to the passenger compartment and its distribution throughout the passenger compartment are also carried out automatically, taking into account fluctuations in the temperature of the outside air. When switching to the economy mode, the air conditioner is turned off, but the interior heating and airflow are carried out automatically.
