Radiator Blower Fan — Removal and Installation (VW Golf 5)

Attention! This chapter covers engines with a capacity of 1.4 liters BCA, FSI 1.4-/1.6 liters BKG/BLN/BAG/BSE/BSF, diesel with a capacity of 1.9 liters. The differences inherent in other engine types are listed separately at the end of this chapter. Removing the fan from the casing (diffuser) is the same for all engines.


Removal



1. Remove the engine splash guard, if equipped.

2. Set the upper front cross member to the service position, see the relevant chapter.

3. Disconnect plug 1 and unscrew the fan diffuser mounting bolts (see arrows in the illustration).

3. Disconnect plug 1 and unscrew the fan diffuser mounting bolts (see arrows in the illustration).


4. Remove the diffuser together with both fans by pushing it upwards.

5. Disconnect plug 2 and release plug 1 and all wires (see illustration).

5. Disconnect plug 2 and release plug 1 and all wires (see illustration).


6. Unscrew the nuts (see arrows in illustration 7.5) and disconnect the fans from the diffuser.



Installation



Installation of fans is performed in the reverse order of removal.

The tightening torque of the nuts securing the fans to the diffuser is 10 Nm, and the bolts securing the diffuser to the radiator is 5 Nm.

Cars with 1.6 liter petrol engine BGU/BSE/BSF.


7. Release the air hose from the mounting on the upper front cross member and the air filter.

8. Remove the engine splash guard, see the relevant chapter.

9. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the air hose from the receiver.

10. Disconnect the lower cooling hose from the radiator.

11. Disconnect the fan plug.

12. Unscrew the fan diffuser mounting bolts and remove the diffuser from the engine compartment by pushing it upwards.

13. Disconnect the fan and diffuser.

Cars with 2.0 litre FSI petrol engine AXW/BLR/BLX/BLY.


15. Remove the upper protective cover from the engine, see the relevant chapter.

16. Release the air hose from the mounting on the upper front cross member and the air filter.

17. Unscrew the upper diffuser mounting bolts.

18. Drain the coolant.

19. Disconnect the lower cooling hose from the radiator.

20. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the air hose from the receiver.

21. Disconnect the fan plug.

22. Unscrew the lower fan diffuser mounting bolts and remove the diffuser from the engine compartment by pushing it upwards.

23. Disconnect the fan and diffuser.

Cars with 2.0 liter BDK diesel engine.


Remove the engine protection (mudguard), see the relevant chapter.

25. Release the air hose from the mount on the air filter.

26. Disconnect the fan plug.


27. Unscrew the fan diffuser mounting bolts and remove the diffuser from the engine compartment together with the fan by pushing it upwards.

28. Disconnect the fan and diffuser.

Cars with 2.0-liter TFSI petrol engine AXX.


29. Remove the upper protective cover from the engine, see the relevant chapter.

30. Unscrew the upper diffuser mounting bolts.

31. Remove the engine protection (mudguard), see the relevant chapter.

32. Disconnect the fan plug.

33. Unscrew the lower bolts securing the fan diffuser and remove the diffuser from the engine compartment by lowering it down.

34. Disconnect the fan and diffuser.
