For some modifications of the Golf II (e.g. GTI) twin-shaft carburetor engines with 16 valves are installed. Below are some of the repair operations for this engine.
Since on a sixteen-valve engine the upper part of the intake manifold blocks access to the cylinder head, it is necessary to disconnect the intake manifold.
Disconnect the spark plug cable lugs. Disconnect the accelerator cable.
Remove the connecting hose between the throttle valve and the mixture regulator.
Loosen the nuts at the junction of the top flap and the bottom of the intake manifold.
Take aside the guide tube of high voltage wires with wires.
Remove the upper part of the intake manifold.
When installing, check that the gasket is correctly positioned between the upper and lower parts.
Remove two bolts in the middle of the cover and six more around the perimeter.
Remove the cover.
When reinstalling, be sure to install new gaskets (only in set). The longer gasket serves to prevent oil from seeping into the spark plug channels. It must be carefully laid in the same way as a tight-fitting rubber gasket.
Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm. On a sixteen-valve engine, head cover 1 (pic. 170) is held on the head with two bolts 2. For sealing on one side, a gasket 3 is used - for the holes of the spark plugs and a tight-fitting rubber gasket 4.
