Removal the cylinder head (16V) (VW Golf 2)

Disconnect the ground wire from the battery. Drain the coolant, collecting it. Remove the upper part of the intake manifold.

Disconnect the coolant hoses from the cylinder head.

Mark and disconnect the electrical connectors on the cylinder head and intake manifold.

Tag and disconnect the vacuum hoses from the throttle body.

Pull out the injectors with pliers, but do not disconnect the fuel lines.

Disconnect the plug from the cold start valve, unscrew the valve and set it aside along with the connected fuel line.

Remove the air hose between the throttle valve and the air flow meter.

Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold. Remove the timing belt cover.

Loosen the belt tension and pull it off the exhaust camshaft drive sprocket.

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Remove the cylinder head bolts (when the engine is cold) in the reverse order to that shown in Figure 173.



Remove the head together with the intake and exhaust manifolds. If necessary, tap it around the perimeter with a plastic hammer.

Remove the old head gasket.

Checking the head and reinstalling it (including tightening torques) are produced in the same way as on the eight-valve engine.
