Fuel tank (VW Golf 2)

For safety reasons, the tank must always be removed with the vehicle parked in a well-ventilated area.

1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Using the fuel pump, empty the fuel tank (the tank does not have a drain plug).

3. Lift the boot cover, then unscrew the round nut of the fuel level sensor.

4. Remove the electrical wire plug from the socket on the sensor. Then disconnect the elastic fuel supply pipes (to the fuel pump) and return of fuel (from the fuel sump).

5. The front wheels must be blocked with wedge-shaped stands and the rear of the car must be raised using a jack. Remove the right rear wheel.

6. Disconnect the elastic air bleed hose from the fitting on the fuel tank funnel neck (figure 3.6).



7. Disconnect the elastic air bleed pipe 5, which connects the tank to the funnel, and disconnect the air bleed tube.



8. Disconnect the rubber cuff from the fuel funnel neck, protected by a large C-shaped spring ring.

9. Support the fuel pump with a jack and a wooden block, then loosen the mounting bolts and disconnect the support straps 1 (figure 3.6) and lower the tank onto the ground. On gTI models, you will also need to remove the side protective plate. Note the disconnection of the ground wire near the fuel funnel and the nuts securing the tank to the body on the side of the fuel funnel neck.

10. If it is necessary to remove the equalizing tank 14, unscrew the fastening bolts and remove it from the wing bend

11. If the fuel pump is contaminated with sediment and water, remove the fuel level sensor and flush the tank with clean fuel. If the tank is damaged or leaking, it can only be repaired by a specialist or replaced with a new one.

12. Install the tank in the reverse order of removal. Make sure that the rubber gaskets are installed on the support belts. The elastic pipes must be installed so that they do not bend.
