Fuel level sensor (VW Golf 2)

As a safety precaution, the fuel level sensor should always be removed from the vehicle and installed in a well-ventilated area.

1. Disconnect the battery ground wire clamp.

2. Lift the floor covering in the luggage compartment and unscrew the round cover of the fuel level sensor.

3. Disconnect the electrical wire plug from the fuel level sensor socket, and then disconnect the flexible fuel pipes - supply and return. If the sensor connection nipples are directed to the front of the car, then the right one is used to connect the return pipe from the sump, and the left one is used to connect the pipe feeding the fuel pump.

4. Loosen the fastening nut and remove the sensor, marking the position of the connecting nipples. A suitable large spanner may be required to loosen the fastening nut. The nut has a right-hand thread.

5. Remove and replace the sensor gasket with a new one.

6. Install the fuel level sensor in the reverse order of removal. Make sure that the unit is installed according to the written signs. Replace the clamps securing the fuel pipes, feed and return, with belts clamped with bolts.

Check that the electrical wire plug is securely inserted into the socket on the sensor.
