Engine with carburetor or injection system
The fuel level sensor is located at the top of the fuel tank. It consists of a float and a potentiometer.
When the fuel level drops, the float also drops. A potentiometer connected to the float increases the electrical resistance of the sensor. As a result, the voltage on the indicating device drops and the arrow of the fuel gauge moves in the direction «leer» (empty).
Removing
Attention: No open flame, fire hazard!
Disconnect the battery ground wire.
Disconnect the plug from the fuel level sensor.
Mark the belonging of the supply and return fuel lines to the connecting fittings, then release the clamps and remove the pipelines.
Using the VAG-2012A special tool, turn the metal lock ring to the left and release the sensor. If no special tool is available, use a suitable pipe clamp or loosen the lock ring bayonet with a wooden rod and light hammer blows.
Caution: No sparks should be generated.
Pull the fuel level sensor up and out. Before removing, put a rag down and catch the escaping fuel.
Installation
Insert the fuel level sensor with a new O-ring so that the marks on the tank and the fuel level sensor are opposite each other, see figure. Lubricate the O-ring with engine oil first.
Turn to the right and tighten the metal locking ring.
Put on the fuel hoses and secure them with new clamps.
Insert electrical plug.
Connect ground wire to battery.
Check the operation of the fuel gauge.
