"Scrolls" whether the starter motor?
The starter is inefficient or not working at all. Read about the atom in this chapter, in the section "Sources of malfunctions in electrical equipment. On the contrary, if the engine is scrolling actively, for further localization of defects, it is necessary to answer the following questions in turn.
Is fuel being supplied to the injectors?
Using an open wrench SW17, unscrew the fuel line nut at one of the injectors. Now the assistant briefly affects the starter (the gear lever is in the neutral position). Does diesel fuel come out at the injector of the fuel system? If so, then the fuel supply is probably OK. If there is no fuel, read the section "Sources of problems in the fuel supply system".
Is the preheat system OK? (Cold engine won't start.)
Connect the contact of the test lamp to the electrical connection of the glow plug: keep the other contact of the lamp "at the mass". The assistant briefly turns the ignition key to position "Pre-glow". Does the lamp flash? If it does not illuminate even though the engine is cold, the glow plug system is defective. If the lamp is lit, then the power supply to the glow plugs is supplied. However, the spark plugs themselves may be faulty. Read section "Troubleshooting in the pre-glow system".
Visual control
Before discussing why a diesel engine does not want to start, it makes sense to visually check the engine compartment.
- Are the fuel lines sealed? You can detect this by the smell of diesel fuel.
- Perhaps the contacts in the pre-glow system have loosened?
- Is the wire leading to the high pressure fuel pump switch good?
Troubleshooting in electrical equipment
If the starter "does not want" scroll the engine, look at the control lights located in the instrument panel. They give some information about a possible malfunction.
- The control lights go out when the key is turned: the battery is discharged or weakened due to a long service life. The starter may have a short circuit.
- The control lamps remain brightly lit when the starter is turned on: wire (terminal 50) the starter relay is defective, the starter is defective, the contact brushes are worn out, or the terminal 50 contact in the ignition switch is defective. In automatic transmission: The start switch in the control lever is defective. Move the control lever slightly forward and backward; start up again at the same time.
- The control lights do not light at all: the battery is discharged, the tip of the starter wire and the battery terminals are oxidized.
Troubleshooting in the fuel supply system
If, when carrying out the control described above, fuel does not flow out of the injectors, then the following can be considered as sources of malfunction.
- There is no more fuel in the tank.
- The switch in the fuel pump is defective and blocks the fuel supply to the injectors.
- Clogged fuel filter or fuel lines. In winter, the fuel may have frozen in the fuel lines to a gelatinous state.
- After carrying out the work at the fuel pump, the hollow screws of the forward and reverse pipelines were mixed up. The hollow screw for the drain line is marked with letters "OUT".
- Other sources of violations can be found in the chapter "Diesel injection system", In chapter "Malfunctions in the diesel injection system".
Instruction. If clogged or filled with frozen diesel fuel lines or a filter prevent further driving, use a spare canister as "emergency" tank. Remove the pipe leading to the fuel pump near the filter. Clean thoroughly and insert into a spare canister previously placed in the engine compartment. Secure the canister well. Hole must face backwards (to avoid splashing when braking). Fix the hose in the canister so that it does not hang out. So you can safely go to the nearest workshop. This method should never be used on a car with a carbureted engine. There is a risk of fire!
Troubleshooting in the pre-glow system
The glow plug system can be checked within a short time using a test lamp. If there is a defect in this system, you can quickly bring clarity using the checks described in chapter "Pre-glow system".
Things to keep in mind
The most common causes of road malfunctions in the described models "Volkswagen" are the following:
- Violation of contacts in electrical equipment.
- Broken V-belt.
- Defective radiator fan thermostat switch.
- Broken accelerator linkage.
A driver who pays attention to the above points before a long trip and, if necessary, takes the necessary spare part with him on the road will not be helpless in case of a problem on the way.
