Main gear of automatic transmission (VW Golf 1)

The final drive of an automatic transmission uses a different oil than the manual transmission. It must have a viscosity of SAE 90 and meet one of the following two specifications:

• API GL5
• MIL-L-2105B

There is no provision for checking the oil level or changing it. However, it is necessary to check in the following cases:

• if the main gear housing has leaks on the outside or
• the ATF fluid level in the automatic transmission has risen or fallen without obvious signs of external leaks.

This may be caused by the exchange of oil between the automatic transmission and the final drive, as described earlier.
