Replacing the oil filter (VW Golf 1)

According to the manual, the oil filter should be changed every second oil change, i.e. every 15,000 km. Since the filter is in the main oil line of the engine and all the oil must constantly pass through the filter, deposits must not be allowed to interfere with this. If the filter is clogged with deposits, then due to the pressure difference before and after the filter, the pressure relief valve is triggered and the oil enters the lubrication system directly, bypassing the filter and not being cleaned, which leads to increased engine wear.

• Disconnect the oil filter using a wrench with a tension band.
• Hold the filter over a container with old oil, let the residue drain, then throw the filter into a special waste container.
• Lubricate the sealing ring on the new filter with oil; tighten the filter manually without applying too much force.
• After a few kilometers, check for oil leaks and tighten the filter if necessary.
