Checking the tightness of a manual gearbox (VW Golf 1)

The gearbox uses oil differently than the engine, and it can leak out through leaky areas. If there is no oil-soaked dirt on the gearbox housing, the gearbox is sealed. Otherwise, the oil level should be checked.

• The work is carried out in a pit, overpass or lift.
• Unscrew the inspection plug with a 17 mm Allen key.
• The oil level is normal if it is at the lower edge of the inspection plug.
• If there is less oil, add the required amount using a supercharger or a funnel with a hose. Have the gearbox leak fixed at a service station.

Choosing the Right Type of Oil for a Manual Transmission

During operation, there is no need to change the oil in the gearbox. If such a need arises, for example, during repairs, then the oil for the gearbox must meet certain requirements: viscosity class SAE 80 or 80W-90, quality level according to API GL-4.
