Manual gear shifting — «Tiptronic» (selector) (VW Touareg 1)

NOTE: The Tiptronic system provides the driver with the option of manual gear shifting.

In position D, move the selector lever to the right to activate "Tiptronic" mode (fig. 1.112).



Push the selector forward slightly + to engage a higher gear.

Push the selector back slightly to engage a lower gear.

When accelerating, the automatic transmission automatically shifts from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears to a higher gear just before the engine reaches its maximum permissible speed.

If you select a lower gear, the shift will only occur when there is no danger of the engine over-revving.

If the selector is in position D or S, then when you press one of the levers on the steering wheel, the automatic transmission switches to the manual control mode "Tiptronic".



Pull the right paddle + towards the steering wheel to shift up (fig. 1.113).



Pull the left paddle towards the steering wheel to shift gears down.

Approximately 15 seconds after the last action on one of the levers, the gearbox automatically switches to the previously selected D or S program.

When accelerating, the automatic transmission automatically shifts from 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears to a higher gear just before the engine reaches its maximum permissible speed.

If you select a lower gear, the shift will only occur when there is no danger of the engine over-revving.

Selector positions

NOTE: The instrument cluster display shows the selector position and gear engaged.

The selector position is shown both on the side of the selector and on the instrument cluster display (fig. 1.114).

If the gear shift was carried out using the manual "Tiptronic" control, then the display only shows this gear (fig. 1.115).

R - Parking (parking) blocking

In this position of the selector, the vehicle's drive wheels are mechanically locked.

The selector can only be moved to the parking lock position when the vehicle is stationary.

When moving into and out of position P, you must press the lock button (in the selector handle) and simultaneously press the brake pedal.

If the battery is discharged, it will not be possible to move the selector out of position P.

R - Reverse

In this position of the selector, reverse gear is engaged.

The selector can only be moved to the reverse position when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling.

When shifting to position R, it is necessary to press the lock button and simultaneously press the brake pedal. In the selector position R, with the ignition on, the reversing lights are on.

N - Neutral position

In this position of the selector the gearbox is in idle mode; there is no transmission of force to the drive wheels and no engine braking.

Never shift the selector to position N when driving downhill - there is no engine braking. The service brake system is under too much strain.

When driving downhill with the selector lever in position N and the engine switched off, the automatic transmission may fail.

D - Position for long forward movement (normal program)

In this selector position, all forward gears are automatically shifted up and down. The nature of the shifts is determined by the engine load, your driving style and the speed of the vehicle. When driving in the mountains in this selector position, the engine braking capabilities are minimal. The display shows the selected selector position D and the gear currently engaged.

When moving the selector from position N to position D at a speed below 5 km/h and with the vehicle stationary, the brake pedal must be pressed.

S - Position for long forward movement (sports program)

In this selector position, all forward gears are automatically shifted later up and earlier down to fully utilize the engine's power. The nature of the shifts is determined by the engine load, your driving style and the speed of the vehicle. When driving in the mountains, the engine's braking capabilities are minimal in this selector position. The display shows the selected selector position S and the gear currently engaged.

CAUTION: When driving the vehicle with the engine off and the selector in position N, the automatic transmission will fail due to lack of lubrication.

NOTE: If you accidentally move the selector lever to the N position while driving, you must remove your foot from the accelerator pedal and wait until the engine is idling before returning the selector lever back to the D position.

Selector lock

NOTE: The selector lock prevents the selector from being accidentally moved to one of the drive positions and, thus, the uncontrolled movement of the vehicle.

To release the selector lock, press and hold the brake pedal and simultaneously press the lock button on the left side of the selector handle.

The selector lock is only engaged when the vehicle is stationary and at speeds of up to 5 km/h. At higher speeds, the selector lock in position N is automatically disengaged.

When moving the selector through position N (for example, from R to D) the selector is not locked. This makes it possible, for example, to "rock" a stuck vehicle. If the selector is in position N for longer than one second without pressing the brake pedal, the selector lock is activated.
