The figure shows the plastic parts that are mounted on the body (right - in the model "Jetta", on the left - in the model "Golf"): 1 - radiator grille; 2 - spoiler; 3 - big spoiler (formula E equipment); 4 - the lower part of the lattice; 5 - edging headlights; 6 - the lower part of the lattice; 7 - radiator grille; 8 - edging headlights; 9 - wheel arch insert; 10 - wheel niche expander; 11 - overlay protecting from stones.
Only the front fenders can be removed. The rear side parts, together with the rest of the body, form a single welded assembly.
Removing the wheel arch insert
Since June 1982, plastic inserts have been installed in the front wheel arches to protect against stones and dirt.
Remove the corresponding front wheel.
Unscrew a total of 10 cross-head screws along the edge and inside the wheel housing.
The figure shows self-tapping screws with hexagonal heads and cross-shaped grooves (the last type of screws is only in the model "Jetta"). Wings are attached with these screws.
Wing removal
Remove bumper.
Remove grille corner (see section "Removing the grille", chapter "Body parts").
Raise the decorative strip at the front door (see section "decorative strips", chapter "Body parts").
Heat the protective coating near the joints (coating applied to protect the base): The coating can then be removed with a sharp knife. You will need a gas blowtorch and a powerful hot air dryer to work.
Remove the protective layer, thereby exposing the heads of the screws.
Open the engine hood. Unscrew 9 hex screws around the wing: at the edge of the engine hood, at the front below at the wing, inside closer to the door jamb and at the back at the bottom, at the amplifier.
The arrow in the photo points to one of the screws. It can be penetrated if the layer of protective coating is removed.
In the model "Jetta" you also need to unscrew 2 screws with cross-shaped slots: in front under the bumper, as well as at the door jamb.
Then remove the wing, first directing it forward and then sideways.
If necessary, remove the wing trim, see next section.
Between the body and the fender, at the edge of the engine hood and at the door, there are zinc plates under the screws.
If there are no such plates, lay sealing strips instead. Make a suitable hole in the sealing gasket.
After mounting the wing, apply acrylic sealing compound to the joints between the body and the wing (N AKD 511001); smooth gently with a brush.
The gap between the wing and the edge of the engine hood is thickly covered with preservative paste.
Instruction. If, when removing the wing, you see that the bearing surface has rust damage. only welding of the sheet will help.
