Removal and installation
The ignition coil is installed in the rear of the engine compartment (pic. D:25). To remove the coil, disconnect the low voltage wire connectors from the coil terminals, disconnect the high voltage wire going to the distributor cap, and remove the mounting bolts. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
Checking the ignition coil
Ignition coil failures are difficult to detect. To confirm the complete unsuitability of the ignition coil, carry out the following test:
1. Check for low voltage on the positive terminal of the ignition coil (+) with a control lamp (with the ignition on). If there is no low voltage, check the ignition switch and wiring.
2. If there is voltage at the positive terminal of the coil, check the voltage at the negative terminal. If there is no voltage at the negative terminal, the coil is bad.
3. If no fault is found during this test, the ignition coil is strong enough to start the engine, but after a while, when the coil warms up, the fault may reappear. Constant misfiring at high speeds and under load may indicate a malfunction of the ignition coil, if it is known that the rest of the ignition system is sufficiently reliable.
4. The best way to test a coil is to substitute a known-good coil and compare.
