Examination

1. Remove the upper timing belt cover.

2. Loosen the generator mounting bolts and tension eye by one turn.

3. Unscrew the water pump tensioning eye and push the generator upwards.

4. Use a rubber hammer to hit the timing belt between the camshaft drive gear and the water pump gear.

The original material is available on the portal [VWmanual]

5. Loosen the spring of the VW 210 control device by turning the handle.

6. Install the tester between the water pump camshaft drive gear so that the timing belt passes between the slide and the tester feeler gauge.

7. Measure the tension of the toothed belt with a control device and remember it.

8. Turn the crankshaft one revolution and repeat the measurement.

9. Calculate the average value of the two measurements and compare with the required value. Required value: scale value 12...13 on the VW 210 measuring device.

10. If the average value differs from the required value, adjust the timing belt.

Manual adjustment of timing belt tension until September 1991.

1. Pull the spring of the control device to the scale value of 12...13. A steel tongue with a white horizontal stripe protrudes from the side of the measuring probe of the control device.

2. Install the control device.

2. Install the control device.

3. Loosen the water pump mounting bolts (the bolts are shown in the picture to the left and right of the screwdriver). Using a crowbar or large screwdriver, turn the water pump as shown in the figure so that the white horizontal stripe on the control device coincides with the edge of the housing.

4. Tighten the mounting bolts to 20 Nm.

5. Turn the crankshaft one revolution in the direction of rotation and repeat the measurement; if necessary, repeat the adjustment.

6. Screw on the water pump tensioning eye and adjust the tension of the alternator V-belt (see subsection 2.12.1).

7. Install the upper timing belt cover.

Warning! If you do not have the adjustment and control tool at hand (abroad, accident), the belt tension can be done using available tools.

Attention! Tighten the toothed belt so that when you press it with your thumb and index finger, it twists by 90°.

Caution! Avoid high engine speeds until the belt tension has been checked with a test device, if possible as soon as possible.

Semi-automatic adjustment of timing belt tension since October 1991.

1. Loosen the nut securing the spring-loaded tension roller on the cylinder head by 1 turn. The required tension of the toothed belt occurs automatically.

2. Turn the engine 1/4–1/2 turn (90° to 180°) in the direction of rotation.

3. Tighten the fastening nut to a torque of 15 Nm.
