Examination
1. Remove upper toothed belt cover.
2. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and tension eye by one turn.
3. Unscrew the tension eye of the water pump and press the alternator up.
4. Hit the toothed belt between the camshaft drive gear and the water pump gear with a rubber mallet.
5. Loosen the spring of the control device VW 210 by turning the handle.
6. Install the tester between the water pump camshaft drive gear so that the toothed belt passes between the slide and the tester's dipstick.
7. Measure the tension of the toothed belt with a tester and remember.
8. Rotate the crankshaft one revolution and repeat the measurement.
9. Calculate the average of the two measurements and compare with the desired value. Required value: scale value 12...13 on the measuring device VW 210.
10. If the average value differs from the required value, adjust the toothed belt.
Manual toothed belt tension adjustment until September 1991
1. Tension the spring of the control device to a scale value of 12...13. On the side of the measuring probe, a steel tongue protrudes from the control device, on which a white horizontal strip is applied.
2. Install control device.
3. Loosen water pump mounting bolts (the bolts are shown in the figure to the left and right of the screwdriver). Use a pry bar or a large screwdriver to turn the water pump as shown in the figure so that the white horizontal strip on the control device coincides with the edge of the housing.
4. Tighten the mounting bolts to 20 Nm.
5. Turn the crankshaft one turn in the direction of rotation and repeat the measurement, repeat the adjustment if necessary.
6. Screw on the tension eye of the water pump and adjust the tension of the alternator V-belt (see subsection 2.12.1).
7. Install the upper toothed belt cover.
Warning! If there is no adjusting and control tool at hand (foreign, accident), belt tension can be done by improvised means.
Attention! Tighten the toothed belt so that it is twisted by 90°when the thumb and forefinger act on it.
Attention! Avoid high engine speeds until the belt tension has been checked with a tester as soon as possible.
Semi-automatic toothed belt tension adjustment since October 1991
1. Loosen the spring-loaded tensioner roller nut on the cylinder head by 1 turn. There is an automatic, required tension of the toothed belt.
2. Rotate the engine 1/4 to 1/2 turn (from 90°to 180°) in the direction of rotation.
3. Tighten the fastening nut to 15 Nm.
