Adjusting the timing belt tension

Checking the tension

1. Remove the upper timing belt cover.

2. Loosen the spring by turning the handle of the VW 210 control device.

3. Install the tester between the camshaft drive gear and the high-pressure fuel pump gear so that the toothed belt passes between the slide and the measuring probe of the tester.

4. Measure and remember the value of the timing belt tension.

5. Turn the crankshaft one revolution and repeat the measurement.

6. Calculate the average value of two measurements and compare with the required value. Required value: scale reading 12...13.

7. If necessary, adjust the timing belt tension to the required value.

Adjustment

1. Install the control device.

2. Tighten the spring of the control device by turning the handle to the scale value of 12...13. On the side of the measuring probe there is a steel tongue that protrudes beyond the control device. There is a horizontal white stripe on the tongue. This horizontal stripe should coincide with the edge of the control device. If not, adjust the tension of the toothed belt.



3. Loosen the tension roller mounting nut.

4. Turn the tension roller with a wrench (for example MATRA-V159 or HAZET 2587) so that the white horizontal stripe on the steel tongue coincides with the edge of the device body.

5. Tighten the tension roller nut to 45 Nm.

6. Turn the crankshaft one revolution in the direction of rotation and repeat the measurement, adjusting if necessary.

7. Check the start of the high pressure fuel pump (see subsection 2.17.7.6).

Warning! If you do not have the adjustment and control tool at hand (abroad, accident), you can tension the toothed belt using improvised means. Tighten the toothed belt so that when twisting it with your thumb and forefinger, it twists with difficulty by 90°. After this, immediately check the tension of the toothed belt with a control device. Avoid high engine speeds before checking.
