Toothed belt tension adjustment
Tension check
1. Remove upper toothed belt cover.
2. Turn the handle of the VW 210 control device to loosen the spring.
3. Install the tester between the camshaft drive gear and the injection pump gear so that the toothed belt passes between the slide and the tester's dipstick.
4. Measure and note the toothed belt tension.
5. Rotate the crankshaft one revolution and repeat the measurement.
6. Calculate the average of the two measurements and compare with the desired value. Required value: scale reading 12...13.
7. If necessary, adjust the tension of the toothed belt according to the required value.
Adjustment
1. Install control device.
2. Tension the spring of the control device by turning the handle to the scale value of 12...13. On the side of the measuring probe there is a steel tongue that protrudes beyond the control device. The tongue has a horizontal white stripe. This horizontal strip must line up with the edge of the tester. If not, adjust toothed belt tension.
3. Loosen the tension roller nut.
4. Turn the tension roller with a wrench (e.g. MATRA-V159 or HAZET 2587) so that the white horizontal strip on the steel tab coincides with the edge of the instrument housing.
5. Tighten the tension roller nut to 45 Nm.
6. Turn the crankshaft one turn in the direction of rotation and repeat the measurement, readjust if necessary.
7. Check the start of delivery of the high pressure fuel pump (see subsection 2.17.7.6).
Warning! If there is no adjusting and control tool at hand (foreign, accident), you can tension the toothed belt with improvised means. Tighten the toothed belt so that when twisting it with your thumb and forefinger, it can hardly be twisted through 90°. After that, without delay, check the tension of the toothed belt with a control device. Before checking, avoid high engine speeds.
