The ignition distributor has a Hall sensor.

Removal

1. Turn the engine crankshaft to a position where the piston of the first cylinder is at TDC in the compression stroke.

2. Remove the distributor cap by first using a screwdriver to release the retaining clip.

3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Hall sensor.

4. Unscrew the mounting bolt at the base of the ignition distributor and remove the ignition distributor.

Warning: Do not crank the engine with the distributor removed.

Installation

1. Before installing the ignition distributor, check that the engine crankshaft is installed in a position where the piston of the first cylinder is at TDC in the compression stroke. In this case, the installation marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys must be aligned with the pointers.

The information is presented on the website VWManual

2. Check the condition and correct installation of the distributor sealing ring. Replace the sealing ring if necessary.

3. If the engine crankshaft was turned with the ignition distributor removed, then turn it further until the mounting axis of the ignition distributor flange is aligned with the threaded hole.

4. Turn the ignition distributor rotor so that the central part of the rotor electrode aligns with the groove on the ignition distributor housing. From this position, turn the rotor slightly clockwise and install the ignition distributor. When installing the ignition distributor, the distributor rotor must turn to its original position and the central part of the rotor electrode must align with the groove on the ignition distributor housing. Secure the ignition distributor with a bolt, tightening it to a torque of 25 Nm.

5. Check the condition of the ignition distributor cap for contact corrosion, black tracks between the contacts, and the integrity and smooth movement of the carbon contact in the center of the cap. If there are any defects, replace the ignition distributor cap.

6. Also check the condition and fastening of the metal contact of the distributor rotor. If the contact is burnt or its fastening is loose, replace the distributor rotor. If present, remove carbon deposits and traces of corrosion from the contact using a fine file.

7. Install the distributor cap and secure it with the retaining clip.

8. If the high-voltage wires were removed from the ignition distributor cap, connect them to the cap in the engine cylinder operating sequence 1–3–4–2. The electrode for connecting the high-voltage wire of the first cylinder is located near the TDC mark on the ignition distributor housing. Further connection of the wires is performed clockwise.

9. Connect the electrical connector to the Hall sensor.

10. After replacing the ignition distributor, contact a specialist workshop to retrieve the faults recorded in the engine control unit memory and erase them.
