Main faults of the lubrication system (VW Passat B5)

Cause	Method of elimination
When the ignition is turned on, the oil pressure indicator light does not come on
The oil pressure sensor is faulty	With the ignition on, disconnect the electrical connector from the oil pressure sensor and connect it to the vehicle ground. If the oil pressure warning light comes on, the oil pressure sensor is faulty and must be replaced.
Open circuit in the oil pressure sensor electrical circuit or oxidized contacts	Check the electrical circuit of the oil pressure sensor and the condition of the contacts.
Oil pressure warning light malfunction	Replace the oil pressure warning light.
After starting the engine, the oil pressure warning light does not go out
Engine oil temperature too high	As the engine speed increases, the oil pressure warning light should go out.
The oil pressure warning light does not go out when the engine speed increases or lights up while the engine is running
Oil pressure too low	Check the engine oil level and top it up if necessary. Check the oil pressure.
Short to ground in the wire from the oil pressure sensor	Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil pressure sensor and isolate it. Turn on the ignition. If the oil pressure indicator lamp lights up, check the condition of the electrical circuit of the oil pressure sensor.
The oil pressure sensor is faulty	Replace the oil pressure sensor.
Low oil pressure at all engine speeds
The engine oil level in the engine is below normal	Bring the engine oil level to normal.
The mesh filter is dirty or there is a hole in the oil pickup tube	Remove the oil pan and clean the strainer or replace the oil pickup tube.
Increased clearance in crankshaft bearings.	Check the condition of the crankshaft bearings and replace them if necessary.
The oil pump is faulty	Remove the oil pump, check its condition and replace it if necessary.
Reduced oil pressure at low engine speeds
The oil pump bypass valve is in a permanently open position	Remove the bypass valve and check its condition.
Increased oil pressure at engine speeds over 2,000 rpm
The bypass valve does not open	Remove the bypass valve and check its condition.
