Setting the ignition timing (VW Passat B2)

A stroboscope and a control tachometer are used to set the ignition timing.

Connect the stroboscope and tachometer in accordance with the operating instructions.

Start the engine and let it idle. Direct the flashing light of the stroboscope into the clutch housing hatch. If the ignition timing is set correctly, the timing mark on the flywheel should be opposite the lug on the clutch housing. To adjust the ignition timing, loosen the lock nut of the distributor flange and, by turning the distributor housing, align the marks.

Tighten the lock nut securing the ignition distributor flange.
