Checking the cylinder head (VW Golf 2)

Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and engine block, and then check for warping of the mating surface of the cylinder head. Check using a metal ruler placed on the mating surface (see figure 54) in transverse, perpendicular and diagonal directions, and a set of flat probes.

If an area is found where the gap exceeds 0.10 mm, the mating surface of the head must be machined to restore flatness. In the case of severe warping of the mating surface, the head must be replaced.
