Replacement of the release clutch (release bearing) (VW Golf 1)

This job does not require removing the transmission. You only need to tilt the transmission to get to the clutch. If there is enough freedom of movement, you do not even need to tilt the transmission. In addition to a new clutch, a four-speed transmission will also require a new transmission cover gasket. A five-speed transmission will require a new cover.



Remove the clutch rod near the release lever.

Raise the front of the car and place it on supports.

Remove the exhaust system from the holders to avoid stretching.

Support the engine-gearbox block with a jack.

Disconnect the torque rod at the front, as well as the gearbox support at the left and rear.

Remove the rear engine and gearbox mounts.

Lower the drive unit until you have access to the gearbox cover.

For a four-speed gearbox, unscrew the 4 bolts and remove the cover.

For a five-speed gearbox, use a sharp screwdriver to pry the cover off and remove it.



Move the stop buffer away from the release lever.

Press the release lever down.

Remove the release clutch from its guide sleeve: insert a new clutch.

Install the plastic cover of the five-speed gearbox. Do not use a metal hammer for this, as this may cause damage. Use a wooden shim.

Assemble the engine and gearbox mounts. See the table for tightening torques for threaded connections.
