Remove the cover from the top of the gearbox.
Turn the engine crankshaft by the V-belt pulley nut until the 76 degrees before TDC mark and the arrow are opposite each other in the inspection window (see picture).
For the diesel Golf model manufactured before November 1978, to disconnect the engine from the gearbox, the 76 degrees before OT mark on the flywheel (2) must be positioned opposite the arrow in the inspection window of the clutch cap (1). The inspection window is usually covered with a plastic cover.
Unscrew the three connecting bolts from the automatic transmission (torque converter drive disk).

The crankshaft should be rotated further to access all bolts (respectively by 1/3 of a turn).
For all models: Disconnect the engine and gearbox mounting bolts: Remove the protective sheet from the gearbox housing. Disconnect the engine from the gearbox. For an automatic transmission, make sure that the torque converter does not slip out of the gearbox housing.
Use wire to secure the transformer to the gearbox.
Note: If a newer overhead camshaft engine or a new flywheel is installed in a diesel Golf model manufactured before November 1978, the stud on the gearbox must be unscrewed. A new Allen bolt with the same washer must be used for reassembly.
