Type number
According to the standard for all German battery manufacturers, a five-digit number is a characteristic of power, dimensions and design variety. In the described models, there is an index 56320. The number 63 following 5 means the battery capacity. The following two figures characterize the design features and execution.
Voltage and capacitance
There is the following designation - 12 V 63 Ah.
12V is the voltage. Behind the slash is the value in ampere-hour. This is the nominal capacity of the battery. It is measured under standard conditions.
Control current at low temperature
The value of 380 A is the current that the battery can provide at a temperature of -18°C.
Battery power
When you stop your "Volkswagen" with the parking light on, about 9 watts are consumed. If the voltage is 12 V. current flows 0.75 A (calculation according to the formula: power divided by voltage). If the battery has a nominal capacity of 63 Ah, then theoretically it will give a current of 0.75 A for 84 hours. But in practice, everything looks worse.
- After approximately 56 hours, the parking lights will turn off and the battery will be exhausted.
- When the parking light is on, the power supply stops exactly after 19 hours.
- When the alarm is on, there is only enough current for 6 hours.
- The starter makes great demands on the battery. Therefore, there is such a thing as "starting battery". Due to friction losses, the starter instantly consumes over 3000 watts when turned on. The starter only needs 1/5 of that power to start a warm engine. On the other hand, the starter needs more electrical current if the temperature drops and the lubricants become more viscous because of this.
The effect of temperature on the battery
Batteries have a property: the less electricity they have accumulated, the more negatively they react to cold. Old batteries are so susceptible that in the cold they can freeze and collapse. Conversely, if the battery is fully charged, it tolerates frost relatively well. Before the onset of cold weather, it is recommended to check the state of charge of older batteries.
