Checking "Bosch" contact brushes
Loosen the two mounting bolts on the regulator.
Remove the regulator.
Turn the regulator so that the carbon brushes do not hang.
Measure the amount by which the carbon brushes protrude from the regulator.
If this value is only 5 mm, the brushes need to be changed.
To check the length of the contact brushes (1) in the Bosch generator, remove the voltage regulator (2). It is attached with two screws on the rear side of the generator. The minimum length of the contact brushes should be 5 mm (see arrows).
Replacing "Bosch" contact brushes
Carbon contact brushes are soldered to the holder with their connecting wires. Therefore, you will need a soldering iron. New brushes up to July 1980 have a length of 10 mm, and from August 1980 12 mm.
Unsolder the connecting wires and remove the brushes.
Remove the pressure springs from the old carbon brushes and install them on the new ones.
Solder the wires.
Checking "Motorola" contact brushes
Remove both regulator mounting screws on the rear of the generator.
Pull out the regulator and the carbon brush holder located behind it.
Measure the length of the brushes.
If the remaining length is only 5 mm, the brushes are worn out.
The brushes should not be changed individually, but only together with the holder.

Replacement of contact brushes of the company "Motorola"
Motorola brushes cannot be removed from the holder. The holder must be replaced together with the carbon brushes.

Disconnect the wires from the carbon brush holder. The connector remains connected to the regulator.
Remove the green wire connector from the old brush holder and insert it into the new holder.
The red cable connector is connected to the contact panel of the connecting plate.
