1. On modern engines, setting the gap between the breaker contacts using feeler gauges should be considered as a basic adjustment. In order for the engine to operate in optimal mode, it is necessary to check and adjust the angle of the closed state of the contacts.
2. The angle of the closed state of the contacts is the angle in degrees by which the distributor cam rotates during the time between the moment the contacts close and the moment they open. Correctly setting the angle of the closed state of the contacts allows not only to achieve more precise adjustment of their gap, but also to compensate for changes in the gap that can be caused by wear of the distributor shaft and its bushings or differences in the height of the cam protrusions.
3. The angle of the closed state of the contacts is measured using a special device, connected in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The correct angle of the closed state of the contacts is specified in the Specifications. Devices of one type measure the angle of the closed state of the contacts of a running engine, while devices of the second type require the engine to be turned by the starter during the measurement.
4. If the angle is too large, the gap between the contacts should be increased; if it is too small, it should be decreased.
5. The angle of the closed state of the contacts must be checked and adjusted before checking the ignition timing. The clamping torque is adjusted only when the angle of the closed state of the contacts is correct.
