1. Mark the position of the distributor base relative to the housing of its drive.

2. Unscrew and remove the distributor clamp screw and the clamp itself. Loosen the distributor cap clamps and move it to the side without disconnecting the high voltage wires from it.

3. Remove the distributor.

4. Before installing the distributor, make sure that piston No. 1 is in the TDC position (ignition of the mixture). If the engine is still in the car, it is enough to align the mark on the flywheel with the mark in the slot on the clutch housing. If the engine is removed from the vehicle for repair or overhaul, to bring piston No. 1 into the correct position, it is necessary to set the mark on the crankshaft pulley 5° earlier than the mark on the front surface of the oil pump. In any case, the mark on the rear surface of the camshaft sprocket must be aligned with the mark on the camshaft cover (see figure 4.4).

5. Place the distributor over the hole in the housing of its drive so that the marks made before removing the distributor are aligned. Turn the runner so that its end points to the electrode of cylinder No. 1 in the distributor cap. Usually there is a mark on the rim of the distributor housing that corresponds to the position of this electrode. If it is not there, you can determine the position of the electrode by the distributor cap (see photo).

6. When the distributor drive gears engage, the rotor will turn counterclockwise, so you should first turn it a few degrees clockwise so that it eventually reaches the correct position (see photos).

7. Install the distributor, turn it slightly so that the breaker contacts just begin to open, and then install and tighten the clamp.

8. Replace the distributor cap.

9. Check the ignition timing (see section 4).
