The faster the generator rotates, the higher the voltage and the supplied electric current rise. Such an increase in current and voltage cannot be tolerated by the consumers in the car. Therefore, the regulator installed on the generator limits the voltage and prevents overloading the battery. Only a small current flows through the contact carbon brushes of the generator. In addition, the brushes move on smooth contact rings. This causes only minor wear, the service life is at least 80,000 km. Carbon brushes are located on the inside of the voltage regulator.

The Bosch generator has had a so-called hybrid regulator since August 1980. It has a more compact design and longer carbon brushes. This regulator is only suitable for the newest Bosch generators.

Checking the voltage regulator

Connect the voltmeter clamps between the B+ terminal of the generator and ground.

Let the engine run at 2000 rpm.

The regulating voltage should be 13.3-14.6 V.

If a higher charging voltage is detected during measurement, the regulator is defective and should be replaced.

Too low voltage may occur due to worn contact brushes.
