Auxiliary jumper cables
The auxiliary vehicle should be positioned at such a distance from the Volkswagen that the batteries of both vehicles can be connected via jumper cables.
Check if all current consumers in the de-energized vehicle are switched off.
Connect the clamps of one of the cables to both positive terminals of the batteries.
The other auxiliary jumper cable is first connected to the negative terminal of a charged external battery and then in the engine compartment of the de-energized vehicle to an uninsulated ground (for example, directly to the engine).
Let the auxiliary vehicle's engine run at a higher speed so that the generator produces a lot of voltage.
If the engine does not start immediately, pause from time to time to allow the starter to cool down. Then start the engine of the auxiliary machine again, which will additionally charge the discharged battery.
When disconnecting the jumper cable clamps, first remove the terminal from the negative pole of the charged external battery.
Tow start
A car with a diesel engine can only be started by towing if the battery current is still sufficient to heat the glow plugs, otherwise only an auxiliary starting cable will help.
Turn on the ignition.
Turn on 2nd speed.
Press the clutch pedal all the way down. Set the car in motion.
Quickly release the clutch pedal. The engine should start.
Immediately press the clutch pedal and then the accelerator pedal.
Towing a car
When towing, the diesel engine can be started even without preheating. When towing with the engine running, you have to drive a considerable distance before the diesel engine starts working. Remember that while the engine is not running, the brake booster does not function!
Turn on the ignition, 2nd gear and press the clutch pedal.
The tractor should slowly start moving.
When the speed reaches approximately 15 km/h, slowly release the clutch pedal.
If the engine starts, press the clutch pedal and the accelerator pedal.
Apply the handbrake gently to avoid crashing into the car in front.
Give the towing driver a sound signal.
Turn on idle speed, release the clutch pedal.
Simultaneously, the drivers of both cars smoothly apply the handbrake.
If the fuel has solidified to a gelatinous state, do not tow the vehicle for long distances, as there will not be enough lubrication for the fuel pump.
