Direction indicators
The direction indicators must always be operational, so the corresponding switch is powered directly from the positive terminal of the battery through the fuse.
With the ignition off, press the red switch.
All four indicator lights and the red window in the switch light up in the same rhythm.
If you now switch on the ignition, the green control lamp of the direction indicator also flickers in antiphase. See section "Turn signal control".
Turn off the alarm system; leave the ignition on.
When the direction indicator lever is depressed, a flashing signal and a green control lamp should flash regularly.
Turn signal malfunctions
If only the green indicator light briefly flashes once when the direction indicators are on, then one bulb is out of order. When the alarm is flashing, the failure of any lamp cannot be seen. Read more about lamp replacement "Lamp replacement", chapter "Lighting".
If the bulbs stay on for a long time when the direction indicators are on, then the relay has a defect. See section "Relays and control devices", chapter "Devices".
If only the control light is on, but the direction indicators are off, then the defect is also in the relay.
If the flashing indicators light up in turn: first at a slow pace, and then at a fast pace (e.g. when switching on or off powerful current consumers such as a heated rear window or a windshield wiper), first move the wires that are close to it away from the relay. If this does not help and all the plug connections, including the taillight ground, are in order, the relay should be changed.
If only the hazard warning flasher works without a turn signal, then there is no power to the corresponding fuse or there may be a defect in the switch (for dismantling, see chapter "Devices").
Short circuit the defective flashing light relay
Further driving with a failed flashing alarm relay is not entirely safe, because in heavy traffic and, above all, in the dark, other drivers will not notice when you want to turn.
Pull out the flashing alarm relay from the neutral part of the electrical equipment. The relay sits in different places on pre-July 1982 and post-1983 models. (see pictures).
Make a shunt bridge between terminals 49 and 49a. To do this, insert a paper clip or a short piece of wire into the plug connections of the central part of the electrical equipment.
Reinsert the relay.
When the turn signal lever is pressed, the lamps are on, but will not flash.
Turning the lever on and off produces a flashing alarm rhythm.
