Checking the steering gear protective cover (VW Golf 1)

The moving joints between the steering gear and the tie rods are protected by a rubber boot. If the boot is damaged, dirt and moisture get into the steering gear. The steering gear lubricant combines with dirt and moisture to form a kind of "grinding paste" that impairs the operation of the steering gear pinion. The steering becomes "viscous" when driving straight ahead, and additional adjustments no longer help; jamming occurs when turning the wheels, that is, after turning the steering wheel does not return to its original position.

It is best to check with the front wheels removed.

Turn the steering wheel left or right.

Stretch the cover (corrugation) gradually, part by part, to reveal cracks in the corrugation.

Check: is the retaining ring securely seated on the outside? (see picture).
