Checking the dust caps and play of the tie rod joints (VW Golf 1)

On the right and left between the transverse steering rod and the steering knuckle near the wheel support housing there is a hinge. The steel spherical head of the hinge pin has a synthetic, self-lubricating shell and is also protected by a dust cap, which creates a seal and prevents moisture from penetrating inside.

Check for cracks in the tie rod joint cuffs.

Check for possible play in the joint. To do this, the machine must be on the ground. It is best if it is on an inspection pit.

Have the assistant turn the steering wheel left or right several times (short-term). Check if there is any play in the steering rod joints.

Steering rod joints with defective seals or play should be replaced immediately (see section "Replacing the tie rod end").
