Checking the condition of the dust covers of the lower joints of the front suspension

Checking the condition of the dust boots of the lower joints (1) of the front suspension and the steering rod end (2)

Execution order
1. Raise the front of the car and support it on stands with the wheels hanging in the air.
2. Use a portable lamp to illuminate the front suspension lower ball joint dust boots (arrows) (see fig. Checking the condition of the dust covers of the lower joints of the front suspension) and check their condition.
3. Use a portable lamp to illuminate the dust boots of the upper joints of the front suspension (1) and the dust boot of the tie rod end (2) and check their condition, see Fig. Checking the condition of the dust boots of the lower joints (1) of the front suspension and the tie rod end (2).
Warning: Any wear on these boots will result in loss of lubricant and entry of water and dirt, resulting in rapid wear of the ball joints or steering gear.
If there are any defects, for safety reasons, have the relevant joint with dust cover replaced at a VW service station.
