Checking the dust covers of the front suspension joints (VW Golf 4)

1. Raise the front of the car and support it on stands with the wheels hanging in the air.



2. Use a portable lamp to shine a light on the front suspension lower joint dust boots (arrow) and check their condition.



3. Use a portable lamp to shine a light on the tie rod end dust cover (arrow) and check their condition.

4. Any wear of these covers will result in loss of lubricant and entry of water and dirt, which will lead to rapid wear of the ball joints or steering gear. If there are defects, for safety reasons, at a Volkswagen service station, replace the relevant joint with a dust cover.
