Removing
Remove the drain plug from the oil pan and drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
Loosen the bolts securing the pan and remove it together with the gasket (pic. D:36).
Remove the two bolts securing the oil pump to the crankcase and remove the pump.
Inspection
Remove the bolts, remove the pump cover with the oil pick-up, then pull the gears and drive shaft out of the pump housing.
Inspect the gears, drive shaft, and inside of the pump housing for damage or excessive wear.
Check the backlash between the teeth and the axial play of the pump gears as shown in fig. D:34 and D:35. If the backlashes are outside the limits specified in section "Technical data", replace the entire pump assembly.
Installation
Remove the oil pickup strainer by prying out the end plate with a screwdriver. Rinse the strainer.
Install the pump on the crankcase and secure it with two bolts. Before tightening the bolts, make sure that the pump drive shaft is engaged with the ignition distributor drive.
Install the oil pan with a new gasket. Make sure the gasket is properly installed before tightening the pan bolts. If socket head screws are used instead of hex bolts, they should be tightened with a lower torque (see section "Technical data").
Tighten the oil pan drain plug and fill the engine with the correct grade of engine oil (see section "Technical data") Approximately 3.0 liters of oil are needed to fill the sump.
