Replacing the oil seal
The seal is installed in the auxiliary shaft cover and is easily replaced after removing the timing belt.
1. Remove the cooling pump pulley. Remove the sprocket mounting bolt and remove the sprocket and woodruff key from the auxiliary shaft.
2. Remove the two bolts and separate the auxiliary shaft cover from the cylinder block.
3. Use a screwdriver to remove the old seal from the socket in the cover.
4. Clean the oil seal seat and lubricate it with a thin layer of engine oil.
5. Press the new oil seal into the socket until it stops. There is a special tool for pressing the oil seal VW 10-203 (figure G.33), but if you don't have one, you can use a mandrel or a socket wrench of the appropriate diameter. Make sure that the seal is installed evenly, without skewing.
6. Reinstall the auxiliary shaft cover onto the cylinder block, using a new O-ring if necessary. Insert the key, install the sprocket and tighten the sprocket bolt to the specified torque. Install the pulley onto the cooling pump. Install the toothed belt and all previously removed parts.
