Depending on the configuration, the cars have mechanical steering or power steering (since 1992 it has been installed in series). The steering mechanism is of the rack and pinion type. The steering column is trauma-safe.

Steering characteristics are shown in Table 6-1.

Steering characteristics are shown in Table 6-1.

The steering gear consists of right and left steering rods. The rods are attached to the steering knuckles with their outer cones, and to the rack with their inner cones.

Starting with the vehicle identification number ZA R 099 265, ball pins of the steering rods of a modified design of the TRW type are installed. They are interchangeable with the ball pins of previous vehicles, provided that all ball pins are replaced with pins of the new design. It is prohibited to install pins of the previous and new designs together. The rod of the new pin is extended by 3 mm and has a cylindrical recess and a centering point on the end (fig. 6-1 and 6-2).

The power steering system includes a high-pressure pump, a spool-type distributor and a power cylinder, which is combined into one unit with the steering mechanism.

On cars with a diesel engine and on cars with air conditioning, there is a cooler for the power steering fluid, made in the form of a pipeline laid along the subframe of the front of the car.

The steering components are shown in Fig. 6-3.

The power steering pump is of the vane type and is driven by a V-belt from the crankshaft pulley. On cars with a gasoline engine, a 9.5x730 La belt is used, on cars with a diesel engine - 9.5x740 La. The pumping pressure of the power steering pump at idle is 75-82 kgf/cm².
