Removal and installation the steering shaft (VW Passat B4)

To remove, disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the decorative cover of the horn switch, set the front wheels to the straight-ahead position, unscrew the steering wheel mounting nut and remove the steering wheel. Remove the fuse box cover. Remove the storage shelf on the driver's side. Disconnect the steering shaft cardan joint. Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Disconnect the connectors from the steering column switch housing.

Remove the steering column switch housing. Drill out the bolts securing the shaft support to the front body shield. Remove the steering shaft, applying alignment marks to the connecting flange.

Install the steering shaft in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:

• observe the required tightening torques for threaded connections:
• install new shear bolts securing the shaft support to the front shield:
• install the steering shaft according to the marks applied to the connecting flange during removal;
• before installing the steering shaft, make sure that the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
