If any universal joint wears out, the entire shaft assembly must be replaced.
There are several versions of shafts - they differ in the markings applied to the main part of the shaft (drawing L:10):
- Golf/Jetta (steering wheel on the right) - 2 rings of notches and marking "17R"
- Golf/Jetta (steering wheel on the left) — "17L"
- Scirocco (steering wheel on the right) - 3 rings of notches and marking "53R"
- Scirocco (steering wheel on the left) - 1 ring of notches and marking "53L"
Replacement
1 Disconnect the steering rod ball joints as described previously.
2. Disconnect the steering gear from the body and the gear shift drive from the steering gear.
3. Unscrew the steering shaft joint tightening bolts, remove the steering gear from the mounting studs, after which you can remove the steering shaft.
4. Install the new steering shaft and steering gear in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:
5. Make sure that the hole in the universal joint (B) is aligned with the groove for the clamp bolt on the shaft (figure L:11).

6. Before installing the steering shaft, turn the steering wheel and steering gear to the position corresponding to the straight-ahead direction of the wheels.
8. Tighten all nuts and bolts to the torque specified in the section "Technical data".
