If any universal joint is worn, the entire shaft assembly must be replaced.
There are several versions of the shafts - they differ in the markings applied to the main part of the shaft (pic. L:10):
- Golf/Jetta (steering wheel on the right) — 2 notch rings and markings "17R"
- Golf/Jetta (steering wheel on the left) — "17L"
- Scirocco (steering wheel on the right) — 3 notch rings and markings "53R"
- Scirocco (steering wheel on the left) — 1 notch ring and marking "53L"
