The Golf, Jetta and Scirocco have rack and pinion steering; the steering column is connected to the rack and pinion steering mechanism by means of a steering shaft with cardan joints.
The pressure on the steering rack can be adjusted directly on the vehicle. Spare parts for the steering mechanism are not supplied, therefore, in case of wear or damage to the steering mechanism or its parts, the entire mechanism must be replaced.
Adjustment of a convergence of forward wheels is carried out only by the right steering draft which tip can be replaced separately. Left (factory installed) the steering rod is not adjustable, and its joint and tip cannot be replaced separately. In the event of wear or damage, the left tie rod is replaced as an assembly, with only adjustable tie rods available as parts.
To remove the steering column, it is not necessary to remove the steering gear and dashboard.
