The brake fluid reservoir is located at the rear section of the engine compartment on the left side.
Checking the brake fluid level
For the brake system to function properly, the brake fluid level must be within the specified limits. The fluid level in the reservoir must always be between the MAX and MIN marks. The fluid level may drop slightly over time due to automatic adjustment of the brake pads. This should not be a cause for concern.
If the brake fluid level drops below the MIN mark, the brake system warning light will come on. In this case, stop driving immediately. For a comprehensive check of the brake system, to find the cause of the brake fluid leak and to eliminate it, contact a Volkswagen dealer or a specialized auto repair shop.
The brake warning light comes on to warn you that the brake fluid level in the reservoir is low. Contact your Volkswagen dealer immediately.
Replacing brake fluid
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. If the water content in the brake fluid is too high, it can lead to corrosion of the brake system after some time. The boiling point of the brake fluid will also decrease significantly. This is why it is necessary to change the brake fluid every two years.
Caution: If the brake fluid is too old and the brake system is subjected to increased use, a vapor lock may form in the system itself, which will reduce the efficiency of the brakes and the safety of the vehicle.
Use only DOT4 brake fluid that meets SAE J 1703 specifications.
To avoid corrosion of brake components, do not add or mix DOTS Silicone Brake Fluid with your vehicle's brake fluid. This type of corrosion can cause brake system failure.
Brake fluid is poisonous. Therefore, it should be stored in special closed containers out of the reach of children. It is also necessary to remember that brake fluid corrodes the varnish and paint coatings of the car.
Due to the complexity of disposal of brake fluid (the need for special tools and high-quality expertise) it is recommended that you contact your Volkswagen dealer to have your brake fluid replaced.
It is recommended to replace the brake fluid during vehicle maintenance.
