Checking the brake fluid level in the expansion tank

The brake fluid expansion tank is located under the hood. It has two chambers, one for each brake circuit. The threaded plug has an air bleed hole, which must always be free of dirt.
The expansion tank is transparent, so the brake fluid level can be monitored from the outside at any time. In addition, the VW T4 has a warning light on the instrument cluster that the brake fluid level is too low. However, it is still necessary to look at the expansion tank from time to time.
1. The brake fluid level should be between the MAX and MIN marks.
2. Fill only with new brake fluid, specification FMVSS 116 DOT 4.
3. As a result of brake pad wear, the brake fluid level drops slightly, this is normal. If the brake fluid level is slightly above the MIN mark, there is no need to add fluid, although the lower limit of the level has been reached.
4. If the brake fluid level drops sharply over a short period of time, this indicates a brake fluid leak. The leak location must be found. As a rule, these are worn brake cylinder cuffs. Based on safety conditions, it is better to entrust the system tightness check to a service station.
