Brake force regulator — design description (VW Golf 1)

All models produced after August 1978 have a brake force regulator on the left in the direction of travel, in front of the rear axle. It can reduce the fluid pressure transmitted to the rear wheel brake cylinders. This is done depending on the load: high pressure is created when the car is fully loaded, with the rear axle being slightly relieved when braking. Low pressure is provided when there are only one or two people in the car.

If the braking force is too great, the rear wheels may lock up and the car may turn around. The brake force regulator is used to prevent this.

The brake force regulator (3) receives "information" about the position of the rear axle via the lever (1) connected to the rear axle and the transmitting spring (2). Before adjusting the brakes, the lever must be pressed once in the direction of the rear axle so that there is no residual pressure
