Examination
1. Vigorously depress the brake pedal at least five times in place with the engine off, then start the engine with the brake pedal depressed. The pedal under your foot should move noticeably down.
2. Otherwise, unscrew the vacuum hose from the brake booster, start the engine. Place your finger on the end of the vacuum hose to check for vacuum.
3. If there is no vacuum: check vacuum hose for leaks and damage, replace if necessary. Tighten all clamps. For gasoline engines, the vacuum is created in the engine intake pipe, which is attached to the side of the engine.
4. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the vacuum pump and check with a finger for vacuum at the hose connection.
5. Replace brake booster if necessary (at the service station).
