Remove nuts -arrows-. Detach wishbone from ball joint and respectively from steering knuckle. Remove driveshaft outer joint from wheel hub. Tie the drive shaft to the body with wire.
Instruction: The drive shaft must not hang down as this will damage the inner joint.
Screw the ball joint back onto the triangular link.
Screw engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383 A- together with support -T10149- to hub with wheel bolt.
Remove bolt connecting steering knuckle to suspension strut -arrow-.
Insert spacer -3424- into opening in steering knuckle.
Turn it 90°with the ratchet wrench and remove the wrench from the spacer -3424-. Press the brake disc in the direction of the suspension strut by hand. Otherwise, the shock absorber strut may be skewed in the steering knuckle hole. Remove the shock absorber strut from the steering knuckle hole by pulling it down. The steering knuckle must be lowered using the engine and transmission jack -VAG 1383 A- until the shock absorber strut is completely out of the hole in the steering knuckle. Tie the steering knuckle with wire to the subframe. Remove engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383 A- from under steering knuckle.
Only when removing the left shock absorber
Remove wiper arms -1-.

Remove the plenum box cover. Remove hexagon bolts for upper shock absorber mounting -arrows- and remove suspension strut.
Installation
Screw the engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383 A- together with the support -T10149- to the hub with the wheel bolt. Insert the shock absorber strut into the steering knuckle and secure it with a socket head bolt and a new nut. The end of the bolt with the internal polyhedron must face the front of the vehicle. Remove spacer -3424-. Both arrows on the upper pillar support -arrows- must point parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Remove the support wire from the steering knuckle.
Carefully raise the steering knuckle with a jack until the bolts -arrows- connecting the suspension strut to the cup can no longer be screwed in. If necessary, use a ladder, eg ladder -VAS 5085-, to screw in bolts. Tighten bolts for upper shock absorber mounting -arrows-. Remove support bracket -T10149-. Tighten bolt for suspension strut in steering knuckle -arrow-. Remove nuts -arrows-. Insert the drive shaft into the wheel hub. Install the ball joint with the steering knuckle on the triangular lever. Screw ball joint to triangular link -arrows-.
Instructions: Check the boot for damage and creases.
Tighten the hub bolt.
Instructions: The car must not stand on wheels, otherwise the wheel bearings will be damaged.
Install the water box cover. Install the wiper arms. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order. Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts.
