Caution: The vehicle must not be on wheels. Once the bolt is loosened, the wheel bearing may be damaged by the weight of the vehicle. If it became necessary to roll the car with the drive shaft removed, then first install the outer hinge into the hub and tighten the hub bolt to a torque of 120 Nm.
Remove the bottom soundproof casing. Remove wheel. Remove nuts -arrows-.
Detach wishbone from ball joint and respectively from steering knuckle. Unscrew from the stabilizer of its rack (at both sides). Pull the outer CV joint out of the wheel hub. Secure the drive shaft against falling. Assemble drive shaft puller -T10382-. To remove the shaft with ball joint -1-, assemble the puller so that the notch arrow-plate -T10382/1 faces the screws T10382/2-. Connect the assembled drive shaft puller -T10382- and the inertia puller -VW 771- to each other.
Instruction: In order to remove the drive shaft from the gearbox using puller -T10382-, the shock absorber strut with all attached parts must be pulled back.
Move shock absorber strut with all attachments back and secure with strap -T10036-, eg to lift arm. The strut must be retracted so that the puller -T10382- can be positioned parallel to the drive shaft.
Fit puller -T10382- and press on drive shaft. Remove drive shaft.
Installation
Remove any paint residue and/or corrosion from the threads/splines of the outer CV joint. Install a new retaining ring in the groove of the gearbox side shaft. Apply multipurpose grease -G 060 735 A2- to splines of drive shaft. Put the ball joint on the splines of the semi-axial shaft of the gearbox. Insert the drive shaft into the joint as far as it will go. After that «jerk» completely push the hinge onto the semi-axial shaft of the gearbox.
Instructions: It is strictly forbidden to use a hammer or other percussion instruments!
Check the seating of the CV joint retaining ring by pulling the hinge out of the gearbox.
Caution: When performing this check, only pull on the joint, not on the drive shaft.
Remove belt -T10038-. As far as possible, insert the splined end of the outer CV joint into the splined hole in the wheel hub. Screw ball joint to triangular link -arrows-.
Instructions: Check the boot for damage and creases.
Install the lower soundproof casing. Tighten the hub bolt.
Instructions: The car must not stand on wheels, otherwise the wheel bearings will be damaged.
Install the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts.
Tightening torques
Ball joint to triangular lever. Use only new nuts | 60 Nm |
Drive shaft to hub "hexagon head bolt". Use only new bolt | 70 Nm and tighten by 90° |
